Linearity: galaxy formation encounters an unanticipated empirical relation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Measurements from galaxies spanning a broad range of morphology reveal linear scaling enclosed dark to luminous mass that is not anticipated by standard galaxy formation cosmology. The found extend the inner galactic region outermost data point. Uncertainties in relation are narrow, with rms = 0.31 and {\sigma} 0.31. It unclear what would produce this linearity mass. Baryonic processes challenged account for scaling, no matter candidate possesses property result relation. may indicate new candidates, or an astrophysical process beyond theory.

A fossil record of galaxy encounters.
The cosmic infrared background (CIRB) is a record of a large fraction of the emission of light by stars and galaxies over time. The bulk of this emission has been resolved by the Infrared Space Observatory camera. The dominant contributors are bright starburst galaxies with redshift z approximately 0.8; that is, in the same redshift range as the active galactic nuclei responsible for the bulk o...
متن کاملConstraints on Galaxy Formation from the Tully - Fisher Relation
New models for the formation of disk galaxies are presented. I discuss the constraints on galaxy formation that follow from fitting the model to the near-infrared Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, with an emphasis on reproducing the small amount of scatter observed. Once the parameters that describe the supernova feedback are tuned to fit the slope of the observed TF relation, the model reproduces th...
متن کاملStar Formation and Tidal Encounters with the Low Surface Brightness Galaxy UGC 12695 and Companions
We present VLA H I observations of the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 12695 and its two companions, UGC 12687 and a newly discovered dwarf galaxy 2333+1234. UGC 12695 shows solid body rotation but has a very lopsided morphology of the H I disk, with the majority of the H I lying in the southern arm of the galaxy. The H I column density distribution of this very blue, LSB galaxy coincides in ...
متن کاملThe galaxy stellar mass–star formation rate relation: Evidence for an evolving stellar initial mass function?
The evolution of the galaxy stellar mass–star formation rate relationship (M∗−SFR) provides key constraints on the stellar mass assembly histories of galaxies. For star-forming galaxies, M∗−SFR is observed to be fairly tight with a slope close to unity from z ∼ 0 → 2, and it evolves downwards roughly independently of M∗. Simulations of galaxy formation reproduce these trends, broadly independen...
متن کاملSelf-regulating galaxy formation as an explanation for the Tully-Fisher relation
Using 3D hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation with supernova feedback and a multiphase medium, we derive theoretical relations analogous to the observed Tully-Fisher (TF) relations in various photometric bands. This paper examines the influence of self-regulation mechanisms including supernova feedback on galaxy luminosities and the TF relation in three cosmological scenarios (CDM, ΛC...
